The Ombilin Coal Mining Heritage of Sawahlunto is a late 19th century industrial system built by the Netherlands colonial government. The mines were worked by local labourers (including forced labourers), the town of Sawahlunto grew to 7,000 inhabitants.
Later on copra became also an important trade product produced by farmers. Also the development of the Ombilin coal mine and field in Sawah Lunto had Padang as its outlet and was an economic improvement to the city Padang as well as the province of west Sumatra.
